The last winter festival on the Tasmanian calendar is the Huon Valley Mid Winter Fest. It begins on Friday 12th of July and runs for the weekend until Sunday 14th of July over the darkest nights of the year. As they say in the classics, winter is here. The Huon Valley is approximately 40 minutes drive from Hobart Town. It has long been the apple heartland of Tasmania, which is often referred to as the Apple Isle. What is Huon Valley Mid Winter Fest about? The Huon Valley Mid Winter Fest celebrates the apple tree in a distinctly pagan…

5 Cool Things

It is time for 5 Cool Things You Can Do in November. October was a crazy fast month. Or was it just me? I spent the majority of October in the wondrous lands of England and Norway. It was my “Escape from Tasmania”. It’s good to be home. I guess. Return to work has been woeful. Jetlagged. Exhausted. Trying to write this without head butting the keyboard. November, sometimes better known as “The Month Before December” has some very winey events on in the Land of Tasmania. Sidenote, I recently read a blog where someone referred to Tasmania as “Little…

5 Cool Things

Hello and welcome to the latest instalment of the Escape Valve blog. Did you get to any of the 5 Cool Things you can do in September? It’s been pretty quiet in the Escape Valve offices as far as Tassie has been concerned. There has also been a distinct Oreo shortage. Have you ever visited a place that is macabre or disturbing? What made you want to go there? Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and death camp is prime example. A death camp is not exactly…

Hobart Town got dark. Dark Mofo came. Dark Mofo conquered. And like Keyser Soze, it was gone. For the sixth year, early to mid June was a brilliant time to be in Hobart Town. The Town got painted red, and dressed in black, for Dark Mofo was ‘ere. Hobart now delays its inevitable (but way over hyped) hibernation from the cold (it’s not “cold-cold” to begin with!), to celebrate the dark, the light, the cold, the fire, the loud, the quiet, the buried and the risen. Amidst all the dark and cold, light and fire, there is feasting. Plenty of feasting.…
